Welcome Ski fans! If you are a regular reader of the Ski in Luxury Blog then you will know that the World Ski Awards are upon us. We have been giving our readers the down low on all the nominees for this years prestigious event and now it’s time for us to turn our attention to the nominees of Switzerland’s best ski resort.

With some of the best resorts in the world to choose from, we know that this competition is not going to be clear cut. To make your life easier when choosing where to go, here is everything you need to know on the Swiss big hitters!

 

Davos and Klosters

The stunning area of Davos and Klosters two neighbouring villages combining to create over 320 Kilometres of piste skiing.

This historic destination is the highest Town in Europe and is dated back to being one of the first ski resorts to develop ski lifts as we know them today! This was all the way back in 1930!

This resort can provide skiing for all abilities and is known for its diverse mixture of runs allowing snow enthusiasts access to five different mountains. If you are an intermediate skier you will need to head over to Parsenn which is accessed by the Funicular with a multitude of blues and reds to keep you smiling all day.

 

Gstaad

Gstaad offers some of the finest hotels in the Swiss Alps and non other is as iconic as the Gstaad Palace featured above. This picture was taken during the height of winter and it’s easy to see why people are taken away by this incredible hotel. skiing is of a similar calibre allowing skiers and boarders access to one of the largest areas in Europe.

Gstaad is first and foremost known for its glamorous atmosphere and traditional charm offering holiday makers the chance to step back in time. There are no vehicles running through the resort being completely pedestrianised throughout.

 

Saas Fee

The beautiful Saas Fee area in Switzerland offers an ancient village at a high altitude. It is breathtakingly surrounded by thirteen 4,000 metre peaks, including the highest mountain in Switzerland the Dom at an impressive 4,545 metres. The resort starts at 1,800 metres and can ascend skiers up to an altitude of 3,600 metres ensuring great snow conditions throughout the season. This beauty also comes with a glacier so there is skiing on offer all year round.

This is one of the most snow sure resorts in the Alps and has over 140 kilometres of piste heaven ensuring your legs have a suitable ache by the end of the day.

 

St. Moritz

St. Moritz is a fabled mountain town located in the Engadine Valley situated at 1,856 metres above sea level. The resort is best known for its snow polo and glitzy champagne atmosphere. With a whole assortment of luxury Chalets and hotels there is so much on offer here than just the skiing.

This isn’t too shabby either providing over 350 kilometres of piste to play around with. St. Moritz is also known for its sunshine with an average of 322 days a year! This is a must if you want a goggle tan…..

 

Verbier

This resort needs no introduction and it is easy to see why with all the skiing that is on offer here, lets not forget the level of luxury accommodation either! The resort comes with a whopping 410 kilometres of piste to ski and 4 snow parks for the free style skiers out there, just in case you think you are Candide Thovex!

There are 92 lifts and a whole variety of different levels of piste offering the perfect alpine retreat for all levels of skier. The area is made up of 5 different resorts Verbier, Nendaz, Veysonnaz, Thyon and La Tzoumaz giving you endless amounts of choice.

 

Zermatt

Zermatt one of the most sort after resorts in the Alps. Not only known for its skiing but its mountaineering history being at the forefront of expeditions dating back to 1865 when Edward Whymper and co ascended the Matterhorn for the first time.

The resort is located at an altitude of 1,620 metres with the highest lifts taking you up to an altitude of 3,820 metres. This resort is an experience in itself to get to with the rail journey from Geneva or Zurich being a breathtaking ascent providing lucky passengers with panoramic views whilst transporting you high into the Alps. Zermatt is completely pedestrianised similarly to other Swiss resorts and only allows for electric vehicles in resort. Zermatt really is a throw back in time with horse drawn carriages, brilliant skiing and a breathtaking setting.
