During my first ‘Fam’ trip to Val d’Isere with Ski In Luxury back in April 2015 I was drawn in to the hottest new Après ski joint in resort. The crowds of skiers and boarders, the fantastic live music and of course the obligatory pint meant I really couldn’t stay away. Upon my return to the UK I knew I had to make contact with the manager of THE latest place to be seen in Val d’Isere….
I recently had the opportunity to pick the brains of the man behind Cocorico, Victor Jarland Strid. Here is what he had to say:
SIL – For those not in the know, please can you tell me a little bit about Cocorico and how it all started?
Victor – We got the idea about starting an Après Ski about 7 years ago, when Doudoune Club was on its second season. The idea became reality the season after and we opened up what was then called ”Le Chalet”. It was a nice Après spot back then as well, but we knew we had more to give and the dream was always to be able to open something unique and fun in Val d’Isere. Before last season we finally got the chance to open Cocorico – Après Ski.
SIL – Where did the name Cocorico come from?
Victor – Cocorico means ”cock a doodle doo” in French, and is sometimes used to express pride. The name has a good ”ring” to it and is fun which is what we represent at our Après sessions.
SIL – How is Cocorico linked to nightclub Doudoune?
Victor – Doudoune Club & Cocorico is the same company, managed and owned by the same people. Working night and day 🙂
Doudoune is one of the biggest nightclubs in the alps, and a must if you love the nightlife.
Cocorico is put on this earth for the mountain lovers, that still wants a good party (but be in bed early) and to be up for first lifts the next morning.
SIL – The bar launched in 2014, what were the highlights from the first season?
Victor – After a lot of hard work preparing for the first season it was nice to finally see the place kick off. I can’t give you one highlight. Everything from the staff, bands to all the clients made the whole season a highlight!
SIL – What makes Cocorico different to other Apres Ski bars in Val d’Isere?
Victor – The location at the Rond Point Des Piste and the view we have from our terrace is definitely unique, and we’re the only ski-in/ski-out Après Ski in the center of Val d’Isère. What’s better than dancing with views of the mountains until the sun goes down, it has a magical feel. We also have live music and DJs everyday – that would never play any electronic (house) music! We have created something for everyone in Val d’Isère, and this is shown in the clients we have. Everyone, from 18 years old to 100 years old can be found dancing on the tables.
SIL – What can we expect from the 2015/2016 season?
Victor – For this season we are extending the outside area, with 1 more bar and obviously more space. We want to take it step by step, and grow into what we are creating. Cocorico will be just as mad and crazy as last season, with a lot of new bands, but always the same atmosphere!
For the music lovers, we will also add some live music by night in the newly refurbished Doudoune Club. This will kick off every night from 10.30 with great deals in the bar followed by the best DJs in resort.
SIL – Are there any plans to expand Cocorico and have bars in other resorts?
Victor – We have only just started Cocorico, and we will focus on building the brand here in Val d’Isere, before we start thinking about other resorts. The thought has obviously crossed our minds, but we are not in any rush! One season at a time!
SIL – Can you give us a sneak peek into the events not to be missed next season? I was gutted I couldn’t stay around in resort last season for the water slide action and the closing party.
Victor – The water slide was definitely a success. We did not really have the weather with us that day, but the whole idea was to get wet! This will hopefully be something that we can do for many years to come, and make something big out of it. The Rat Race was also one crazy day, so this will definitely be on the agenda!
SIL – Other than Val d’Isere, do you have a favourite ski resort? Which one and why?
Victor – I haven’t been outside Europe skiing, but to be honest for me there is no other resort than Val d’Isère. Here you’ve got everything you want for a great skiing holiday (or to live). Great restaurants, nightlife and of course the skiing. Together with Tignes we have some amazing mountains, and there is definitely something for everyone. Val d’Isère has so much more to offer than just the skiing, and that’s what makes the magic.
SIL – Finally… skiing or snowboarding?
Victor – 100% Telemarks now! My girlfriend got me in to that last season, and now I’m sold. Maybe it’s running in my Scandie blood 🙂
Big thanks to Victorfor taking the time to answer our questions. I think it’s time to start planning my next Val d’Isere trip…..
